Sabina, what does writing the blog mean to you and why did you become an entrepreneur in the first place?
Working for myself wasn’t part of the plan but I always say everything happens for a reason.
I only started blogging to keep the ‘grey cells’ working during maternity leave and here I am over 11 years later.
I love working for myself and the freedom and flexibility it affords me and my family. I have even inspired my daughter to start blogging too.
What is your business about? How did you come across your idea?
Mummy Matters is a family-focused blog; it started as a daily journal but has evolved into a parenting and lifestyle magazine.
It was a friend who introduced me to blogging; I hadn’t heard of it until she mentioned it.
I started with sharing the things I was creating and making with my own family and decided to share the resources for other parents who would also find them valuable and of interest.
Since you are also a mom… How do you balance your personal and professional life?
I have only ever worked whilst my children are sleeping or at school.
They were all good sleepers when they were babies and would nap for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.
As they grew up and started nursery and later school, this allowed me to work harder and grow my business.
Have you made any adjustments to your personal and professional life to juggle these two roles?
The benefit of being your own boss is that you can make your job fit around you.
We are currently homeschooling due to a pandemic, and I am grateful that I can help my children without having to answer to someone else about how much work I have completed each day. I feel fortunate.
What is the greatest obstacle you have faced in achieving the success you desire? How do you overcome it?
I think my technical abilities are perhaps the thing that frustrates me the most.
I used to be very tech-minded before I became a Mum, now the grey cells feel a bit fluffy around the edges, so it takes me a bit longer to get my head around things.
Saying that all I know has been self-taught so I haven’t done too bad.
What are the things that help you stay organized throughout the day and get time for everyone and everything? Is there a special time planner, or workspace design, or technique that you use?
Tell us your time management secrets!
My phone and my marketing planner!
I have always been a very organized person, but if I don’t put reminders on my phone, I would easily forget things.
I use the Awesome Marketing Planner from The Girls Mean Business, which I love. It helps me to keep focussed when I am at my desk so that my work time is productive.
Any recommendations to Moms who dream about being entrepreneurs, but just can’t get started?
Have faith in yourself; you are more robust and smarter than you think.
Start small and set yourself manageable goals so that you always feel like you’re winning. If you need to learn a new skill to make your dream a reality, start researching where you can learn them.
Look through your contacts on your phone and see if you have friends who can help you and point you in the right direction.
I love the quote: A goal is a dream with a deadline!
