Kathryn, what does writing the blog mean to you, and why did you become an entrepreneur in the first place?
For me, it means independence, and the ability to support my family through my own creativity and self-expression.
I became an entrepreneur because I had a newborn and daycare prices made a regular job unrealistic. I’ve never regretted it for a second.
What is your business about? How did you come across your idea?
I started my site as a way of sharing my favourite recipes, parenting articles and product reviews with readers.
That was over a decade ago! I was one of the original “mom bloggers.”
Since you are also a mom… How do you balance your personal and professional life?
It took some trial and error. In the early years of my business, I spent every waking moment working.
I quickly learned that once I’d established my site, it was possible to reach a positive balance. One of the most efficient ways I’ve been able to do that is by using a desktop computer instead of a laptop.
I can only work while in my office; once I leave the room it’s family time!
Have you made any adjustments to your personal and professional life to juggle these two roles?
Absolutely! I wake up earlier so I can clear out my daily emails.
I also dedicate the entire morning to work because all three of my boys are in school at that time.
What is the greatest obstacle you have faced in achieving the success you desire? How do you overcome it?
Increasing my traffic! As I work with an ad network, traffic is the best way to increase my income.
A great Pinterest manager and learning about SEO has been the biggest help.
What are the things that help you stay organized throughout the day and get time for everyone and everything? Is there a special time planner, or workspace design, or technique that you use?
Tell us your time management secrets!
I LOVE the Happy Planner system. It lets me track everything from work to workouts to doctor’s appointments, with places for everything.
Meal planning is also an essential to keep my days running smoothly.
Any recommendations to Moms who dream about being entrepreneurs, but just can’t get started?
You have to take a leap of faith! But that doesn’t mean it has to be a huge investment.
If you dream of running a website like I do, start on a free platform like Blogger.com and just spend an hour or so a night getting it started.
